Dave's father Miller Joseph Jamrog (1944-2001) played with touring bands in the 60's and 70’s like The Pointer Sisters, The Temptations and recorded in the UK with The Ventures. Sitting in on Dad's gigs were the first musical experiences for little Davey. Wanting the best for his son, Miller arranged for Davey to study with Alan Dawson, at age 14 and then Bob Gullotti in college.
In 1989, at age 17, Dave produced and recorded his first album with Dave Newton, Trevor Lyman and Dan O'Neil as the band The Demand, cutting their teeth writing and recording original songs, learning choice cover tunes and performing throughout Southern NH.
In 1991, legendary trumpeter Clark Terry discovered drummer Dave Jamrog while on music scholarship
at the University of New Hampshire. With the help of professor of jazz studies- David Seiler, Clark invited Dave to play at a series of festivals and concerts across the
country, including the Clark Terry Jazz Festivals, at the University of Central Oklahoma, Oklahoma City and The Clark Terry Institute of Jazz at Teikyo-Westmar University, Souix City, Iowa. A highlight of this time was
a week long ebgagement on Norwegian Cruise Line's Floating Jazz Festival (three shows on a shared bill with Dizzy Gillespie in the U.S. Virgin Islands in 1991), and
two shows with Clark in 1994 at The International Association Of Jazz Educators Conference, in Boston, MA. This allowed Dave to share the stage with not only the great Clark Terry, but other jazz greats as Phil Woods,
Snooky Young, Count Basie Band alums Milt Hinton, Doc Cheatham, Red Rodney, Marshall Royal, Al Grey. Clark Terry's Big Bad Band also played host to others like Louis Bellson, Marvin Stamm, Bernard Purdy, Ed Shaughnessy, John Faddis and Arturo Sandoval. Dave will joined Clark Terry once again at the University of New Hampshire for Clark's 85th Birthday Celebration, back in December, 2005.
After college, a self produced CD, Visions,(1996), and collaborations with Mark Shilansky, Thomson Kneeland and George Garzone, began to solidify his desire to perform abroad. The band performed and recorded with aforementioned Downbeat Magazine Five Star Winner George Garzone (of the Fringe and Joe Lovano Nonet), former Blue Note recording artist Jerry Bergonzi, Grammy Award Nominee Luciana Souza, Fresh Sound New Talent's Andrew Rathbun, Dave Holland Big Band Trumpeter Taylor Haskins, Boston Luminaries Herb Pomeroy and Bill Pierce, John Damian and Charlie Kohlhase. Mark and Dave still continue to collaborate on jazz shows and other creative projects.
Since 2002, Dave has been regularly touring Nationally and Internationally with 8 time W.C. Handy Award Nominee Toni Lynn Washington, whose background includes Sam & Dave, Jackie Wilson and Bobby Blue Bland. Toni recorded a few successful "TOP-40" singles for Kon-Tiki/Atlantic Records, released 3 albums with Bruce Bears on the Tone-Cool label and another release produced by Duke Robillard on NorthernBlues Records, Toronto. The last year or so has brought them to Canada, Portugal, the King Biscuit Blues Festival, Helena, AR (second biggest in the country) and a Germany/Netherlands/Italy tour. Toni Lynn just released a live album this Summer entitled "Favorite Flower" Toni Lynn Washington Live with Davey J. on drums, and the usual cast of characters including Bruce Bears, Kevin Belz and Chuck Langford.
W.C. Handy Award Nominee Sherman Robertson calls Dave "Fatback" for his powerful in-the-pocket backbeat. Sherman's from Houston Texas and never does anything quietly. Blistering Texas style guitar chops and a powerhouse voice. He recorded on AudioQuest and Alligator records, plus a track on Paul Simon's Graceland. He's threatening to unleash another recording soon. (hopefully with Davey J.)
Most recently, Dave has been recording and touring performing live with guitarist/songwriter Kate Schutt. She plays a Special Hybrid Novax 8-string guitar that has bass and guitar on the same axe. If you haven't heard of Kate Schutt or the Novax 8-string Hybrid Guitar, check out the links section and go to their websites. She and Dave and many other special guest musicians from Canada and the U.S. have been touring and recording- most recently 4 appearances at the South By Southwest Music Conference, 2006 in Austin, TX. Other performances at the Vancouver Folk Festival and Guelph, Ontario's "Hillside" Festival were outstanding and attended by thousands of people. Kate and Dave also got a chance to back up Vancouver Musician Ridley Bent, another great guitar slinging Singer Songwriter who plays what he calls "Hick-hop". An interesting mix of country and funky hip-hop beats. Look for more to come from up there in Guelph and beyond.
Since 1995, Dave has been teaching drummers both young and old, inspiring future generations of musicians to play well and enjoy themselves making good, creative music, for professional and/or recreational purposes. He is currently Director of Percussion at the Boston Arts Academy, Boston, and at the Dana Hall School Of Music in Wellesley, MA. Current and Former students have won awards and honors from All-state and District Festivals, Jazz Festivals (Berklee Jazz Fest) and earned scholarships and/or acceptance to colleges around the country including, Berklee College of Music in Boston and Julliard Conservatory, New York City.
Dave and his beautiful wife of ten years Vanessa Holroyd live in Jamaica Plain, Boston, MA with their son and daughter Peter and Sally Jamrog. Vanessa is a flutist and a member of The Arcadian Winds Chamber Music Ensemble and a National Flute Association Award Winner. This past year Vanessa played Flute, Piccolo and Recorder with Emmanuel Music, New Bedford Symphony and the Ket West Symphony with various musicians, including members of the Boston Symphony, Boston Pops, New England Conservatory Faculty, and Boston University Faculty members. Vanessa coaches chamber music at The Boston Youth Symphony (formerly GBYSO) and has been interim Chamber Music coordinator at Phillips-Exeter Academy.
