It's Wagilia- The Polish Wagilia Song
(The Wigilia Singer & Dancer)
2005-12-09
Dave Jamrog, leader and club president
The three-hundred and fifty seventh day of the year
we keep a solemn vigil
when the Evening Star appears
for us it's more than celebrating
the birth of Jesus Christ
and getting them the perfect gift that's moderately priced
No it's more than just tradition that's a hundred years old
so dear and important
we brave the ice and the cold
Even more than getting in the car to drive a hundred miles
to eat a bowl of fermented soup that everyone reviles
no it's the grandest night of all..
when Babci comes to call...
cuz tonight it's Christmas...
we're Polish...
and...
it's... Wa-
gilia so please willya
pass potatoes and the peas
...another shot of Dan's visniak
pickled herring and some beans yeah
It's Wagilia it's Wagilia
have Pam's cookies, don't eat meat ya
'll have to get up from your seat
no matter how many perogies you eat
It's A Polish Christmas Vigil
That goes straight to your middle
It's Wagilia... oh!! It's Wagilia
Come right in the door and many Jamrog's you will find
drinking homemade polish vodka, beer and a choice of fine boxed wines
shrimp cocktail, peanuts, nachos, pickled herring just a start
to a meal that makes your carbohydrate count spike off the charts
There's a serious discussion over what should come next
The elders are conferring The young ones seem perplexed
First you start with candles your shadow they will cast
if not you know the legend, this Christmas is your last
what a way to begin a dinner, a morbid game to play
but, next we share oplatek and stick it under the hay
(chorus)
Ah here comes the barszcz, served with fresh rye bread
Alas, it's taste methinks next year it better if I'm dead
two kinds of potatoes, do I smell cabbage in the air?
hurry, eat beans so you can yank your mother's hair
macie wilki troche grochu die nam spokojj wprzyzm roku
is some kind of good luck wish, are we supposed to serve the fish?
by now we've eaten quite enough to feed a family of twenty
but there are still three courses to go with perogies a plenty
there are cheese and cabbage, potato and fruit all swimming in fresh butter
my gut is swelling but soon I'l be yelling may I please have another?
(chorus)
Rice pudding is the final phase accompanied with cookies
eating one of everything separates veterans from the rookies
decorated sugary shapes and spicy pepper-cockers
their tasi-ness fills to the brim our bulging digestive hoppers
The onslaught has concluded now we're enjoy coffee and tea
thank God 'cause I'm stuck at this table for hours and I really have to pee
To the living room we go and relax, Pam gives me a golden pickle
for Dan a small toilet with flushing sound, when you push the tiny handle
Now you see that Wigilia to me is more than the sum of it's parts
a tradition that endures and grandly ensures A Christmas Day case of the farts.
(chorus)
